Despite the increased fares, people continue to utilize the MRT, LRT, jeeps, buses, and other modes of transportation to travel. This is mostly due to an increase in fuel prices. Even now, amid the pandemic, fuel and gasoline are quite expensive. Commuters also face constant traffic congestion, which is caused by many inattentive drivers, as evidenced by their lack of respect for pedestrians, failure to stop at traffic lights, and even the basic use of their back lights, which can result in accidents. As a result, commuters, particularly students and office workers, must get up far earlier than necessary to ensure that they arrive at their destination on time.
In 2019, Manila ranked third in air pollution-related mortality, with the dominant hypothesis being that the more than two million automobiles registered in the National Capital Region (NCR) are the cause of emissions, in addition to littering and individuals' indifference to their surroundings. This demonstrates how our lack of good long-term planning can wreak havoc on not only people but also the environment. Both commuters and private vehicle users confront numerous challenges, but it is important to remember that over reliance on such unsustainable options has a negative impact on our general health.
